Three Pitta Hunt [14th – 24th September 2017]

Visiting the islands of Santa Isabel in the Solomon Islands and Manus in PNG plus the Cairns area in Australia this tour is designed to give us a good chance of seeing 3 very beautiful and iconic Pittas. Starting on Santa Isabel with the Black-faced Pitta then on to Manus in the Admiralty Islands of PNG for the Superb Pitta and ending up in Cairns for the Noisy Pitta this is a great tour for those collecting these beautiful, jewel like birds. optional extension to Darwin for the Rainbow Pitta can be arranged.


Accommodation in Cairns, in PNG and in Honiara is in comfortable western style hotels. At Tirotonga it is in a basic landowner lodge though electricity is available in the evening.


hour hike up into the mountains to Tirotonga village on Isabel though it can be done at your own pace and we hire porters for luggage. On Manus the tracks around pitta sites can be steep, muddy and slippery. In Cairns there is a steep climb but the path is sealed.

Three Pitta Hunt Itinerary

This itinerary visits 3 countries searching for 3 members of the beautiful and iconic pitta family.

Day 1: Fly from Brisbane to Honiara where you will transfer to your hotel and overnight.

Day 2: then the boat over to Buala where you will meet with your local guides and begin the trek up to Tiritonga which is situated in the islands central mountain chain.

Day 3 – 5: Full day around Tirotonga targeting the Black- faced Pitta. Other birds that can be seen in this area include Fearful Owl and Santa Isabel Rail.

Day 6: Hike back down to Buala and over night
Day 7: Transfer to airport by boat and fly back to Honiara where you will overnight.

Day 8: overnight. An afternoons local birding can be arranged.

Day 9: hotel.

Day 10 – 12: Meet with local guide and begin your hunt for the Superb Pitta.

Day 13: Fly from Manus back to Cairns via Port Moresby.

Day 14: where the Noisy Pitta can usually be found at dawn. The balance of the day will be spent birding the Cairns area with other pitta sites being visited if required

Day 15: Fly out.
